There have been no instances thus far of it occuring in Free Play. So until a software update rectifies this, tread lightly when playing this mission.
The bug also tends to strike more frequently if you fight Dormammu as Susan Storm (The Invisible Woman) as opposed to using Dr. The best strategy to combat this potential bug (of which I have personally fallen victim to on three consecutive occasions), is to play the mission as quickly as possible after booting up the game, and not focusing on breaking every object apart in the level. Another factor that comes into play is the length of time the game has been active before the mission is accessed.
It seems to occur when all of the breakable objects (accessible) in the level are destroyed before facing Dormammu. NOTE: There is a potential bug in this mission on Story Mode whereby the game freezes while fighting Dormammu. Head to Sanctum Sanctorum and build the golden door to gain entry to this side mission. Stranger Danger is unlocked after collecting at least 150 Gold Bricks in LEGO Marvel Super Heroes.
